About Dominoes

Dominoes is played with rectangular tiles divided into two halves, each marked with zero to six pips. The standard double-six set has 28 tiles, one for every possible pair from double blank to double six. The tiles reached Europe from China centuries ago and the game is now a fixture of cafes, parks and kitchen tables from the Caribbean to South Asia.

This table plays draw dominoes, the version most people learn first. With two players each takes seven tiles, and with three or four players each takes five. The remaining tiles form the boneyard. Whoever holds the highest double starts and may open with any tile. Players then take turns adding a tile to either end of a single line, matching the number on the open end.

If you cannot play you must draw from the boneyard, one tile at a time, until you find one that fits. Passing is only allowed once the boneyard is empty. Each game is a single round with a 30-second limit per turn, so it stays quick. It suits beginners and experienced players who like counting tiles and blocking opponents.

How to play Dominoes

1. Be the first player to play every tile from your hand.
2. Tiles are dealt from a shuffled double-six set: seven each for two players, five each for three or four. The rest become the boneyard.
3. The player holding the highest double takes the first turn and may lead any tile. If nobody has a double, the first seat starts.
4. On your turn, play one tile whose number matches either open end of the line. The tile's other number becomes the new open end.
5. If a tile fits both ends, choose left or right. Doubles are placed in line like any other tile and do not create extra branches.
6. If you have no matching tile, draw from the boneyard one tile at a time until you can play. Drawing does not end your turn.
7. You may pass only when you cannot play and the boneyard is empty.
8. Emptying your hand wins. If every player passes in a row the game is blocked, and the player with the fewest pips left in hand wins. Equal lowest totals are a draw.

Dominoes tips and strategy

• Play heavy tiles such as 6-6, 6-5 and 5-5 early. If the game ends blocked, the result is decided by pips left in hand, and big tiles are a liability.
• Keep a spread of numbers. Holding at least one of each value means you can answer whatever appears on the ends without drawing.
• Count the sevens. Each number appears on seven tiles, so once you can see six of a number on the line and in your hand, you know who can still play it.
• Note what makes an opponent draw. If they drew when the ends were 3 and 5, they held neither, and setting both ends to those numbers again will stall them.
• Get doubles out when you can. A double matches only one number, which makes it the hardest tile to place late in the game.
• When you hold several tiles of one number, set both ends to it. You keep the turn moving while everyone else digs through the boneyard.
