Whatever the name, the idea is the same: take turns marking squares and be the first to line up three.

This version keeps the classic 3x3 board with no gimmicks. X always moves first, O replies, and each player has 30 seconds per move so a game never stalls. The eight winning lines are the three rows, the three columns and the two diagonals. If all nine squares fill with no line, the game is a draw.

Because the game is so short, it works well as a warm-up, a tiebreaker between friends, or a first online game for younger players. The bot you meet when no human is available is deliberately beatable: it plays sensibly most of the time but makes occasional loose moves, so a well-set trap will pay off.

How to play Tic-Tac-Toe

  1. The aim is to get three of your marks in a straight line before your opponent does.
  2. Two players share a 3x3 grid. One plays X and moves first; the other plays O.
  3. On your turn, click or tap any empty square to place your mark. You have 30 seconds per move.
  4. A square that has been taken stays taken. Marks are never moved or removed.
  5. Players alternate turns until someone completes a row, a column or a diagonal.
  6. The first player with three in a line wins. If all nine squares are filled with no line, the game ends in a draw.

Tic-Tac-Toe tips and strategy

  • As X, open in a corner. If O answers anywhere except the centre, you can force a win by building two threats at once.
  • As O, take the centre if X starts in a corner, and take a corner if X starts in the centre. Any other reply loses against careful play.
  • Look for a fork: a single move that creates two separate lines of two. Your opponent can only block one of them.
  • Before every move, check whether your opponent already has two in a line with the third square open. Blocking comes before attacking unless you can win immediately.
  • When O holds the centre and X holds two opposite corners, play an edge square rather than a corner. Taking a corner there hands X a fork.
