About Beat Memory

The repeat-the-pattern format became famous through the electronic toy Simon in the late 1970s, and it is still one of the simplest tests of short-term memory around. Beat Memory is this site's multiplayer take on it. You are not chasing a personal best alone. Everyone at the table watches the identical sequence and tries to survive longer than the rest.

Each round has three parts. First the whole sequence plays back at roughly 0.6 seconds per step while input is locked. Then all surviving players repeat it at the same time, with 2.5 seconds plus 0.4 seconds per step to finish. Finally the table sees who made it through. The next round adds one new random pad to the end of the same pattern.

Elimination is permanent: a wrong pad, an extra press after you have already completed the round, or running out of time all knock you out. The match ends when one player remains or, if several people have exceptional recall, at a cap of 30 rounds. It suits groups looking for a quick party game, and anyone who wants a sequence memory test with real stakes.

How to play Beat Memory

The goal is to be the last player still in the game by repeating a growing sequence without a mistake.
In the watch phase, the four pads light up and play their tones in order. No input is accepted while the sequence plays.
In the input phase, tap the pads, or press keys 1 to 4 or the arrow keys, to repeat the whole sequence in the same order.
Every surviving player repeats the pattern at the same time, each on a private set of pads.
A wrong pad eliminates you immediately. So does pressing another pad after you have already finished the sequence for that round.
If the input timer runs out before you finish, you are eliminated as well.
Each new round adds one more pad to the sequence. The last player left wins, and if several fall in the same round, the one who lasted longest ranks highest.

Beat Memory tips and strategy

Break the sequence into groups of three or four pads and give each group a rhythm. Chunks are far easier to hold than a single long string.
Say the colours or numbers under your breath as they play. Combining sound, sight and speech gives your memory three hooks instead of one.
Only the last pad is new each round. Rehearse the part you already know during the playback and save your attention for the final step.
Stop the moment you finish. An extra tap after completing the round counts as a mistake and eliminates you.
Keep an even pace. The timer grows with the sequence, so there is enough time to be deliberate, and most errors come from rushing the middle.

How does Beat Memory work with several players?

Everyone watches the same sequence and then repeats it at the same time on a private set of pads. Players who make a mistake or run out of time drop out, and the rounds continue until one remains.

Is this the same as the Simon game?

It uses the same idea of four pads and a pattern that grows by one step, similar to Simon, but it is an independent multiplayer game. The key difference is that you are eliminated head to head instead of chasing a solo score.

How much time do I get to repeat the pattern?

The input window is 2.5 seconds plus 0.4 seconds for each step in the sequence. A ten step pattern therefore gives you about six and a half seconds, which is comfortable if you tap steadily.

What if everyone left makes a mistake in the same round?

Players are ranked by how many rounds they survived. When several are eliminated in the same round, the one who lasted longer into that round is placed higher and takes the win.

Can I play Beat Memory alone?

The game needs at least two seats, up to a maximum of six. If you start a public game alone, bots fill the other seats, so you can still practise your recall against computer opponents.
