About Memory Match

Memory Match is the card game many people know as Concentration, Pairs or simply the matching game. A grid of cards is laid face down, and players try to remember where each picture is as cards are briefly revealed. It is one of the few games where a sharp seven-year-old can beat an adult fairly.

The board here grows with the table. Two players share 16 cards (8 pairs), three players get 20 cards (10 pairs) and four players get 24 cards (12 pairs). The pictures are a random selection of fruit, food, animals and everyday objects, shuffled fresh for every game.

On your turn you flip two cards. A match gives you one point and another turn straight away, so a good memory can string several pairs together. A mismatch stays visible for about a second so everyone can take note, then both cards turn back over and play passes on. When every pair is claimed, the highest score wins, and equal top scores are a draw. A game takes around four minutes.

How to play Memory Match

The aim is to collect more matching pairs than any other player.
All cards start face down: 16 cards for two players, 20 for three and 24 for four.
On your turn, flip one card, then a second. You have 30 seconds to act.
If the two cards show the same picture, you keep the pair, score one point and take another turn.
If they differ, both stay face up for about a second, then flip back, and the turn passes to the next player.
Matched cards stay out of play. Everyone sees every card that is flipped, so watch other players' turns closely.
The game ends when all pairs are found. The player with the most pairs wins, and a tie for the top is a draw.

Memory Match tips and strategy

Other players' turns are free information. Most pairs are won by remembering what an opponent revealed, not by lucky flips of your own.
Flip an unknown card first. If it matches something you remember, pick up the pair; if not, you can still choose a safe second card.
When your first card has no known partner, turn over a second card you have already seen rather than a new one. That avoids handing the next player fresh information.
Anchor cards to positions, such as top-left corner or second row end, instead of trying to hold a picture of the whole grid.
Late in the game the remaining cards are nearly all known. Take your certain pairs first, because every match keeps the turn with you.

Do you get another turn after finding a pair?

Yes. Every match scores a point and lets you flip again immediately, and you keep going until you miss. Towards the end of a game one player can often clear several pairs in a single run.

What happens if the scores are tied at the end?

If two or more players finish level on the highest number of pairs, the game is recorded as a draw between them. With an even number of pairs on the table, ties are quite common in two-player games.
