A traditional jigsaw is a slow, relaxing hobby. Jigsaw Rush keeps the satisfaction of watching a picture come together and adds a stopwatch and rivals. It is honest to say this is a swap-style picture puzzle, not a table of loose interlocking pieces: the image is cut into a grid of four rows and five columns, the 20 tiles are shuffled, and you fix it by exchanging two tiles at a time.

Each match uses a freshly generated abstract picture made of a colour gradient with overlapping circles, rectangles and triangles, so there is never a memorised answer and no two rounds look alike. All players start from the exact same scramble on their own board, which keeps the race fair. A piece that lands in its correct slot gets a highlighted border, so you can see your progress at a glance.

Rounds last a minute and a half, short enough to play several in a row. It is an easy game to explain to children and grandparents, and a quick warm-up for a group. You can also play it alone as a timed jigsaw puzzle game when nobody else is around.

How to play Jigsaw Rush

1. Put all 20 pieces back in their correct positions before anyone else does.
2. The picture is split into a 4 by 5 grid and shuffled. Every player receives the same shuffled starting layout on a separate board.
3. Tap one piece, then tap another, and the two swap places. Any two pieces can be exchanged, wherever they are.
4. A piece in its home slot is marked with a highlighted border. Pieces never need rotating.
5. The first player to complete the whole picture wins immediately and the round ends for everyone.
6. If nobody finishes within 90 seconds, the player with the most pieces in the right place wins.
7. A tie on correct pieces is broken in favour of the player who made fewer swaps. Level on both counts is a draw.

Jigsaw Rush tips and strategy

• Place the four corners first. The background gradient makes the darkest and lightest corners easy to identify, and they anchor everything else.
• Try to make every swap put at least one piece home. Choose a slot, find the piece that belongs there and swap it in, instead of shuffling tiles around hopefully.
• Look for swaps that fix two pieces at once. If the tile sitting in slot A belongs in slot B and the tile in B belongs in A, one move solves both.
• Follow the edges of the big shapes. A circle or triangle cut across several tiles shows you which neighbours line up, faster than matching colour alone.
• With ten seconds left and no chance to finish, stop experimenting. Wasted swaps count against you if the round goes to a tie-break.
