About Callbreak

Callbreak belongs to the same family as spades, but it has its own character. There are no partners, so all three opponents are trying to break your call, and the rules of play are stricter than in most trick-taking games. You cannot quietly duck a trick: if you can beat the cards on the table, you have to. That one rule is what gives the call break game its tension, because high cards get dragged out whether their owners like it or not.

A match here is five rounds. In each round all 52 cards are dealt, 13 to each of the four players, and every player in turn calls a number from 1 to 8. Then 13 tricks are played. Win at least as many tricks as you called and you score your call, plus 0.1 for every trick beyond it. Win fewer and your call is subtracted from your total. A call of 4 that takes 6 tricks is worth 4.2 points, and a call of 4 that takes 3 costs 4.

The first seat to call and lead moves on by one place each round, so everybody gets a turn at the front. The next round is dealt as soon as the last trick is scored, and a score sheet under the table keeps every round's call, tricks and points in view. This is the plain five-round game: there is no redeal for a weak hand and no bonus for calls of eight or more. A callbreak multiplayer match takes about fifteen minutes with a 25-second turn clock.

How to play Callbreak

  1. The objective is to finish five rounds with the highest total score. Four players each play for themselves and are dealt 13 cards per round.
  2. Spades are trump in every round. Starting with the round's first seat, each player in turn calls a whole number of tricks from 1 to 8.
  3. The first seat leads any card to the first trick, and spades may be led at any time. Play passes to the player on the right.
  4. You must follow the suit that was led if you can, and you must play a card higher than the best card of that suit already in the trick if you hold one.
  5. If the trick has already been trumped with a spade, you still follow suit but may play any card of the led suit.
  6. If you have no card of the led suit, you must play a spade that wins the trick if you hold one. If you cannot win it, you may play any card.
  7. The highest spade wins the trick. If no spade was played, the highest card of the led suit wins. The winner leads the next trick.
  8. After 13 tricks, a player who made their call scores that many points plus 0.1 per extra trick. A player who fell short loses their call in points.
  9. After the fifth round the highest total wins. If the top two totals are equal, the match is a draw.

Callbreak tips and strategy

  • Count sure tricks before you call: the ace of spades, a king or queen of spades with cover, and side-suit aces. Add one for a void or singleton only if you have spare spades to trump with.
  • Do not over-call. Missing a call of 5 costs five points, while an extra trick earns 0.1, so when a hand sits between two numbers the lower call is usually right.
  • Lead your side-suit aces early, before opponents run out of that suit and start trumping them.
  • Use the must-beat rule against others. Leading a middle card forces the players after you to climb over it, which pulls out kings and aces you could never have beaten.
  • Empty your shortest side suit quickly. Once you are void, your small spades turn into tricks whenever that suit is led.
  • Watch what each opponent still needs. When you have made your call, spend spare high cards on taking tricks away from the player closest to making theirs.

Callbreak FAQ

How do you play callbreak online with friends?

Create a private room, share the room code and have your friends join from their own phones or computers. The table needs four players, so if fewer than four of you join, bots take the remaining seats.

What is the trump suit in callbreak?

Spades, always. There is no bidding for trump and it never changes between rounds. Any spade beats any card of the other three suits, and a higher spade beats a lower one.

Do I have to play a higher card in call break?

Yes, when you can. If you hold a card of the led suit that beats the best one played so far, you must play one that does. If you are out of the suit and hold a spade that would win the trick, you must trump. The game dims any card you are not allowed to play.

How is callbreak scored?

Make your call and you score it as points, with 0.1 added for each extra trick. Miss it and the call is deducted. Calling 3 and winning 5 scores 3.2. Calling 3 and winning 2 scores minus 3. Totals carry across five rounds.

Is callbreak the same as lakdi or spades?

Lakdi, or lakadi, is the name used for callbreak in much of India, and the game is the same. Spades is a close relative, but it is played in partnerships, allows a nil bid and does not force you to beat the cards already played.

What is the lowest and highest call?

The lowest call is 1 and the highest offered here is 8. You cannot call zero, so every player has to win at least one trick in each round to avoid a minus score.

How many players do I need for Callbreak?

Callbreak supports exactly 4 players. If a full table of real people isn't ready when you queue, MultiplayerHub fills the empty seats with bots instantly so the match starts without waiting.

Do I need to download anything or sign up to play Callbreak?

No. Callbreak runs entirely in your browser tab โ€” no app install, no account, no email required. Pick a name and you're matched within seconds.

Is Callbreak really free?

Completely free. Callbreak costs nothing to play and never asks for a card โ€” ads keep the servers running instead.

Can I play Callbreak with a specific friend instead of strangers?

Create a private room from the Callbreak page to get a shareable room code, or enter a code a friend already sent you to jump straight into their table.
