About Mini Golf

Mini golf, also known as putt-putt in the US and crazy golf in the UK, is golf reduced to the putter and a set of short holes full of obstacles. It is a game nearly everyone has played on holiday, which is why it works so well as a casual game to play with friends online: nobody needs the rules explained.

This version is a top-down course of six holes. Each hole has its own character: a gentle opener with side bumpers, a wall with a single gap to thread, a field of lively bumper posts, a bunker that drags the ball to a stop, a pond that costs you a stroke, and a slalom of offset walls. The positions are shuffled a little every match, so you cannot simply memorise the perfect line. A dotted guide shows where your ball will travel and bounce before you commit.

Players take alternate strokes on the same green until everyone has holed out. If you reach eight strokes on a hole you pick up and take an eight, which keeps one bad hole from ruining the round or holding everyone up. It can be played solo as a score-attack, as a two player duel, or as a relaxed six-player party round.

How to play Mini Golf

1. The objective is to complete all six holes in the fewest total strokes.
2. Players take turns, one stroke each, all on the same hole. Once your ball is in the cup you sit out until the others finish.
3. Drag back from your ball to set direction and power, then release to putt. On a keyboard, aim with the arrow keys and press Space.
4. The ball rebounds off rails, wall blocks and bumpers. Sand slows it sharply.
5. A ball that rolls into water costs one penalty stroke and is returned to where the shot was played from.
6. The ball only drops if it reaches the cup slowly enough. Hit it too hard and it lips out and rolls on.
7. If you have not holed out after eight strokes, you pick up and score eight for that hole.
8. After the sixth hole the lowest total wins. If totals are tied, the player who won more individual holes outright takes it.

Mini Golf tips and strategy

• Pace matters more than line near the hole. A firm putt that is dead straight can still lip out, so play the last shot to die at the cup.
• Use the rails. When a wall blocks the direct route, a single bank off the side is usually more reliable than squeezing through a narrow gap at full power.
• Never flirt with the pond. Going around it costs maybe one extra stroke, while going in costs a penalty and leaves you exactly where you started.
• Bumpers kick the ball away with almost all its speed, so avoid clipping one on a delicate approach. Sand is the opposite: hit out of a bunker much harder than seems necessary.
• If you putt later in the order, watch how earlier balls roll on the same line and adjust your power to match.
