About 8-Ball Pool

Eight-ball is the pool game most people mean when they say pool: fifteen object balls, a cue ball, six pockets and a race to pot your seven before the 8. It grew out of American pocket billiards in the early twentieth century and is now the standard game in bars, clubs and living rooms around the world.

This online table follows the rules a casual player expects. The balls are racked in a triangle with the 8 in the middle, and the table is open after the break until someone legally pots a ball. That player takes that ball's group, solids (1 to 7) or stripes (9 to 15), and the opponent gets the other. Pot one of your own without fouling and you shoot again. Fouls are called for a scratch, for missing every ball, for striking the wrong group or the 8 first, and for a shot where nothing is potted and no ball reaches a cushion after contact. Any foul gives your opponent ball in hand.

Every shot is simulated on the server, with collisions, cushion rebounds and friction worked out before the result plays back on both screens, so the table is identical for each player. You do not have to call a pocket for the 8. A frame takes about six minutes and there is a 45 second limit on each shot. It works equally well for a relaxed game with a friend or as practice at reading angles.

How to play 8-Ball Pool

Goal: pot all seven balls in your group, then legally pot the 8-ball.
Drag back from the cue ball to set direction and power, and release to shoot. The arrow keys and Space also aim and fire. You have 45 seconds per shot.
The table is open after the break. The first player to pot a ball legally takes that group, solids or stripes, and the other player gets the remaining group.
Pot one of your own balls without a foul and you keep shooting. Otherwise the turn passes.
It is a foul to pot the cue ball, to hit no ball, to strike the other group or the 8 first, or to play a shot where no ball is potted and none touches a cushion after contact.
After a foul your opponent has ball in hand and may place the cue ball before shooting.
Potting the 8 before your group is cleared, or fouling on the shot that pots it, loses the frame immediately.
Clear your group and pot the 8 cleanly to win.

8-Ball Pool tips and strategy

Think about where the cue ball will stop, not only whether the object ball drops. Softer shots give you far more control over position for the next one.
Pick your group with care on an open table. Look at which set has balls near pockets and which has balls stuck on a cushion or in a cluster.
Deal with problem balls early. Breaking up a cluster while you still have easy balls left is safer than leaving it to the end.
Do not forget the cushion rule. A gentle safety that pots nothing and touches no rail is a foul and hands over ball in hand.
Before the 8, check the scratch risk. A straight pot into a corner at full power often sends the cue ball in after it, which loses the frame.

What happens if you pot the 8-ball early?

You lose the frame on the spot. The 8 may only be potted once all seven balls of your group are gone. Potting it earlier, or fouling on the shot that sinks it, gives the win to your opponent.

What happens if I scratch on the 8-ball?

If the 8 goes in and the cue ball is also potted on the same shot, you lose. If the cue ball goes in but the 8 stays on the table, it is an ordinary foul and your opponent gets ball in hand.

How are solids and stripes decided?

Nobody owns a group at the start. The first legal pot after the break settles it: the shooter takes the group of the ball that dropped, and the other player is given the opposite one.

Do I have to call the pocket for the 8-ball?

No. This version does not use called shots. Any pocket counts for the 8 as long as your group is already cleared and the shot is legal, with no scratch and no other foul.

What does ball in hand mean?

After your opponent fouls, you may pick up the cue ball and place it where you like before your shot, instead of playing it from where it stopped. It is a big advantage, so avoiding fouls matters.

Can I play pool against the computer here?
