About Five Letters

Five Letters is a head-to-head version of the guess-the-word puzzle that became a daily habit for many people, similar to Wordle but played live against others and as often as you like. There is no single word of the day here. A new secret is drawn at random for every match, so you can play again straight away.

After each guess the tiles are coloured. Green means the letter is in the word and in that exact position. Yellow means the letter is in the word but belongs in a different position. Grey means the letter is not in the word, or that you have used it more times than it appears. Repeated letters are handled properly: greens are marked first, and a second copy only turns yellow if the secret really contains another one.

During the round you cannot see what rivals have typed. You only see how many guesses each has used and whether they have solved it, which is enough to feel the pressure without giving anything away. The answer is shown to everyone when the round ends.

A round lasts at most two and a half minutes, so it works well as a quick vocabulary duel between friends, a tiebreaker for a group, or solo practice when you start a room with one seat.

How to play Five Letters

  1. The goal is to identify the secret five-letter word in fewer guesses than the other players.
  2. All players are given the same hidden word and have up to six guesses and a shared 150-second timer.
  3. Type any five-letter word and submit it. The guess must be a real word from the game's word list, otherwise it is rejected and does not use up a try.
  4. Read the colours: green is the right letter in the right place, yellow is a right letter in the wrong place, grey is a letter that is not in the word.
  5. Use that feedback to choose your next guess. Opponents' guesses stay hidden, but you can see how many tries they have used and whether they are finished.
  6. The round ends when the timer expires or when every player has either solved the word or used all six guesses.
  7. Solvers rank above non-solvers. Among solvers, fewer guesses wins, and if the count is equal, whoever solved it first is placed higher.
  8. If nobody solves it, the player whose final guess had the most greens, then the most yellows, comes out on top.

Five Letters tips and strategy

  • Open with a word that has five different common letters, such as one mixing two or three vowels with R, S, T, L or N. A good opener is about removing as many candidates as possible, not about getting lucky.
  • If the first guess shows little, play a second word made of completely new letters instead of reshuffling yellows. Covering ten distinct letters in two guesses usually leaves only a few possible answers.
  • Treat yellow as two clues at once: the letter is present, and it is not in that square. Never put a yellow letter back in the same position.
  • Watch for double letters. If the pattern fits words like those with a repeated E, L or S, a grey tile on the second copy of a letter tells you there is exactly one.
  • Fewer guesses beats speed, so do not fire off a hopeful third guess just because a rival has finished. Only when guess counts tie does solving earlier matter.
  • With one square unknown and several possibilities, such as words ending in the same four letters, use a guess that tests several of those missing letters at once rather than trying them one by one.

Five Letters FAQ

Does every player get the same word?

Yes. One secret word is picked for the match and every seat tries to solve that same word. That keeps the contest fair, because the result depends on your guessing rather than on who drew an easier answer.

Who wins if two players both solve it?

The player who needed fewer guesses wins. If both used the same number of guesses, the one who submitted the correct word first takes the higher place. Being quick only matters as a tiebreaker.

What do the green, yellow and grey tiles mean?

Green marks a correct letter in the correct position. Yellow marks a letter that is in the word but in another position. Grey marks a letter that does not appear, or an extra copy of a letter that appears fewer times than you used it.

Can I play more than one word a day?

Yes. There is no daily limit. A fresh random word is chosen for each match, so you can start another round immediately and keep playing as many as you want.

What happens if I run out of time or guesses?

Your round ends unsolved and the answer is revealed. You are still ranked against other players who failed, based on how many green and then yellow tiles your last guess scored, so a close final attempt counts for something.

Can I guess any five letters?

No. Each guess has to be a valid five-letter word in the game's dictionary. Random letter strings are refused with a message, and a refused entry does not cost you one of your six tries.

How many players do I need for Five Letters?

Five Letters supports 1 to 6 players. If a full table of real people isn't ready when you queue, MultiplayerHub fills the empty seats with bots instantly so the match starts without waiting.

Do I need to download anything or sign up to play Five Letters?

No. Five Letters runs entirely in your browser tab โ€” no app install, no account, no email required. Pick a name and you're matched within seconds.

Is Five Letters really free?

Yes, no catch โ€” Five Letters is ad-supported rather than pay-to-play, so there is no subscription or in-game purchase to unlock anything.

Can I play Five Letters with a specific friend instead of strangers?

Create a private room from the Five Letters page to get a shareable room code, or enter a code a friend already sent you to jump straight into their table.
