About Hangman Duel

Hangman is the pencil-and-paper word game most people learn at school. One person thinks of a word and draws a blank for each letter, and the guesser calls out letters one at a time. Every wrong letter adds a stroke to a stick figure, and the guesser loses if the drawing is finished before the word is.

In this multiplayer version the server picks the word, so nobody has to sit out as the setter. All players face the same English word of four to ten letters and have six wrong guesses, matching the classic head, body, two arms and two legs. You only see your own letters. For opponents you see how many guesses they have made, how many were wrong and whether they have solved it, so nobody can copy an answer.

A match is five rounds of up to 75 seconds each. Solving the word earns 40 points, plus 12 for every wrong guess you did not use, a speed bonus of up to 25 for time left on the clock, and an extra 25, 15 or 8 for being the first, second or third solver. It is an easy word guessing game for mixed ages, classrooms and quick breaks.

How to play Hangman Duel

1. The aim is to score the most points over five rounds by solving each hidden word quickly and with few wrong letters.
2. Each round every player is shown the same word as a row of blanks, one per letter.
3. Guess one letter at a time using the on-screen keyboard or your own. Whole-word guesses are not used.
4. A correct letter is revealed in every position where it appears. A wrong letter costs one of your six tries.
5. You solve the round by revealing every letter. If you use all six tries or the 75 second timer ends first, you score nothing for that round.
6. A solve is worth 40 points plus 12 per unused try, up to 25 for speed and a bonus for solving before other players.
7. After each round the word is shown to everyone. The highest total after round five wins, with fewer total wrong guesses breaking a tie.

Hangman Duel tips and strategy

• Start with E, T, A, O, I and N. They are the most common letters in English, so they are the most likely to open up the word without costing a try.
• Check for vowels early in longer words, then switch to common consonants such as S, R, H, L and D once you can see the shape.
• Use the pattern, not the alphabet. A word ending in blank-N-G is almost certainly ING, and a Q is nearly always followed by U.
• Do not rush a risky letter to be first. Each unused try is worth 12 points, which outweighs the gap between first and second solver, so accuracy usually beats raw speed.
• Leave rare letters such as J, Q, X and Z until the pattern clearly demands them.
