Texas hold'em is the form of poker seen in nearly every televised event and home game. Each player gets two private hole cards, five community cards are dealt face up in the middle, and you make the best five card hand from any combination of the seven. Betting takes place before the flop, after the flop, after the turn and after the river, and a hand ends at a showdown or when everyone but one player has folded.

The table here runs as a short sit-and-go style game. Stacks are equal at the start, the dealer button moves round each hand, and the two seats after it post the small and big blind. On your turn you can fold, check or call, raise by at least the size of the last raise, or move all in. Side pots are worked out automatically when a short stack is all in, and tied hands split the pot. A player who runs out of chips is out, and if nobody has won by the end of hand 24 the biggest stack takes it.

Your hole cards are visible only to you until a showdown, and there is a 35 second clock on each decision. There are no purchases, prizes or cash-outs of any kind, so it is a pressure-free way to learn betting, practise reading opponents or host a casual poker night with friends who are in different places.

How to play Poker Royale

1. Goal: win all the chips, or hold the biggest stack when the 24 hand limit is reached. Everyone starts with 1,000 play chips.
2. Each hand, the two players after the dealer button post blinds of 10 and 20, and everyone is dealt two private hole cards.
3. Betting goes round the table. On your turn choose fold, check or call, raise, or all in. You have 35 seconds to act.
4. Three community cards (the flop) are dealt, then a fourth (the turn) and a fifth (the river), with a betting round after each.
5. If all but one player folds, the remaining player takes the pot without showing their cards.
6. Otherwise there is a showdown. The best five card hand from your two hole cards and the five on the board wins. Equal hands split the pot.
7. A player who is all in for less than the others can only win the part of the pot they matched. The rest forms a side pot.
8. Players with no chips are eliminated. The last one left wins, or the largest stack after hand 24.

Poker Royale tips and strategy

• Fold most of your starting hands. Big pairs, high cards of the same suit and strong aces are worth playing, while weak offsuit hands mostly cost you blinds.
• Act last when you can. On the button you see what everyone else does before deciding, so you can play more hands there than from early seats.
• Size your bets against the pot. A bet of around half to three quarters of the pot charges drawing hands without risking your whole stack.
• Keep the hand limit in mind. Blinds stay at 10 and 20, but with only 24 hands a chip lead late on is worth protecting, not gambling.
• Watch how opponents bet, not only what they show. A player who only raises with premium hands can be folded to cheaply.
