About Sketch Party

Guessing what someone is trying to draw is one of the oldest party games there is, played for decades with a pad of paper and a timer and more recently in a wave of online drawing and guessing games. Sketch Party is our version of that format, designed to start quickly and finish in a few minutes.

A match is six rounds, and the drawing duty rotates so that a different player sketches each time. The drawer is shown three words and has 12 seconds to choose one, and then gets 75 seconds at the canvas with a palette of colours, three brush sizes, undo and clear. The words are everyday, drawable things such as a snowman, a guitar or a volcano, so nobody needs artistic talent. Guessers see the number of letters, and a few letters are revealed as hints in the later part of the round.

Guesses are typed into a box and appear in a shared feed. A correct answer is never shown to the others, only the fact that you got it, and an answer that is one letter off earns a private nudge that you are close. Small spelling differences in spacing and punctuation are forgiven. It suits families, classrooms, remote teams and any group that wants a laugh without learning rules.

How to play Sketch Party

1. Score the most points across six rounds by guessing other players' drawings quickly and by drawing clearly when it is your turn.
2. Each round one player is the drawer. They choose one of three offered words within 12 seconds, or one is picked for them.
3. The drawer has 75 seconds to sketch the word using the colours, brush sizes, undo and clear tools. Only the drawer can touch the canvas.
4. Everyone else types guesses and presses Enter. You can guess as many times as you like.
5. A correct guess scores 50 points plus up to 100 more for the time remaining, with an extra bonus for being among the first to solve it.
6. The drawer earns between 30 and 60 points for each player who guesses correctly, more when they get it early.
7. Letter hints appear during the second half of the drawing time, then the word is revealed and the next player draws.
8. After the sixth round the player with the highest total wins.

Sketch Party tips and strategy

• As the drawer, start with the one outline that defines the object, for example the cone of a volcano or the body of a guitar, and add detail only if nobody has it yet.
• Choose the word you can draw fastest, not the one that seems cleverest. You are paid for every correct guesser, and early guesses pay you more.
• Use colour as a clue. A yellow curve reads as a banana far sooner than a grey one, and switching colour takes a second.
• When guessing, type your first idea straight away. There is no penalty for a wrong guess, and the speed bonus shrinks with every second you wait.
• Count the letter blanks before you type and watch for the hint letters late in the round. They often turn two possible answers into one.
