The original snake game was a solo affair on a tiny grid, where the only thing you could hit was yourself. The multiplayer version that took over browsers years later flipped that around. The arena is open, steering is smooth instead of four-directional, and the danger is every other snake on the map. Snake Arena follows that modern io formula.

The key rule is about heads and bodies. If your head runs into another snake's body, you are out, however long you are. Your own body is harmless to you, so you can coil in a tight ring without penalty and even circle a smaller snake until it has no exit. The outer wall is deadly as well. When a snake dies, its length is scattered across the arena as richer food that is worth double.

Scoring rewards both farming and fighting. Every piece of food is a point, the chunky remains of a fallen snake are worth two each, and causing a kill adds a 25 point bonus on top. Dying is not the end, since you respawn short after a couple of seconds and keep your score. Boost gives you a burst of speed but burns your length while you hold it. Rounds are short, so it works well as a quick game with friends or a few minutes of solo play against bots.

How to play Snake Arena

1. Goal: have the highest score when the 90 second round ends.
2. Steer by moving your mouse or pointer, or with WASD and arrow keys. Your snake always moves forward and turns gradually toward where you aim.
3. Eat food to grow longer. Normal food scores 1 point and the larger pieces left by a dead snake score 2.
4. Hold the mouse button, the spacebar or a second finger to boost. Boosting is faster but shrinks your snake while it lasts, and it stops working when you are near starting length.
5. If your head touches another snake's body, you die. Touching your own body is safe.
6. Running into the arena wall also kills you.
7. When a rival crashes into your body you earn a 25 point kill bonus, and their length drops as food.
8. After dying you respawn at starting length a moment later with your score intact. Top score at the buzzer wins.

Snake Arena tips and strategy

• Kills are worth 25 pieces of food. One good cut-off is better than a long stretch of quiet grazing, so look for snakes travelling in straight lines.
• Boost past a rival and turn across their nose. They need time to turn, and your body will be in the way before they manage it.
• Circle smaller snakes. Your own body cannot hurt you, so a closed loop around a short snake leaves them only your sides to hit.
• Stay clear of the border when others are near. The wall is an instant death, and a snake running alongside you can squeeze you into it.
• Do not hold boost for travel. It eats length, and a short snake has less body to trap anyone with.
• Head for fresh crashes. The scattered remains are double value food and usually lie in a dense trail.
