Top-down tank duels are one of the oldest ideas in video games, going back to the arcade and early home consoles, and the version most players remember is the maze battle in which shells rebound off the walls. That is the format here: simple to control, quick to restart and far more tactical than it first appears.

The arena is a lattice of corridors and small rooms. Your tank is slower than its own shells, and each shell bounces off walls twice before the next wall stops it. A single hit destroys any tank, and that includes yours, because a shell that has bounced can come back and destroy the tank that fired it. There is a short pause between shots and a limit of five live shells per tank, so you cannot simply fill a corridor with fire.

Destroyed tanks reappear a couple of seconds later at a safe distance from enemies. The arena is shrunk for small lobbies, so a 2 player tank game is a tight cat-and-mouse duel and an eight-player match is chaos at every junction. With rounds of two minutes it suits a quick break, and the controls take seconds to learn.

How to play Tank Battle

1. The aim is to destroy more enemy tanks than anyone else before time runs out.
2. Drive with WASD and aim the turret with the mouse. On a touch screen, drag to steer with a virtual joystick.
3. Click or press Space to fire. There is a short reload between shots, and you can have at most five shells in play.
4. Shells bounce off walls and the arena border up to two times and disappear at the next wall they meet.
5. One hit destroys a tank and gives the shooter a kill. Being caught by your own rebounding shell counts as a death and earns nobody a kill.
6. A destroyed tank respawns after about two seconds, away from the nearest enemy.
7. The match ends after two minutes or as soon as someone reaches 20 kills. Most kills wins, and fewer deaths breaks a tie.

Tank Battle tips and strategy

• Shoot at the wall, not at the tank. An opponent hiding behind a corner is safe from a direct shot and fully exposed to a bank shot off the opposite wall.
• Never fire straight at a wall directly in front of you. The shell returns along the same line, and your own tank is the first thing it finds.
• Keep moving after you fire. Enemies aim at where they saw the muzzle flash, and a tank that has rolled a few lengths away makes them waste a shot.
• Long corridors are dangerous because shells keep their speed along them. Cross them quickly and fight from doorways where you can duck back.
• Count the other player's shots. Just after they have fired there is a short window before they can shoot again, and that is the time to break cover.
