Table tennis, or ping pong as most people call it at home, is a game of rallies: keep the ball coming back until the other side cannot. This version shows the table from above, with your paddle on the near baseline and your opponent on the far one. There are no button combos to learn. You move the paddle and the physics does the rest.

Two details give it depth. First, the ball gains speed on every paddle contact, so a long rally turns frantic and eventually outruns anyone who is out of position. Second, the paddle passes its own sideways motion into the ball. Swipe across as you make contact and the return bends away at an angle, while a still paddle sends it back straighter. Where the ball meets the paddle face matters too, with edge hits flying wider.

You can also push your paddle forward toward the net to cut off angles early, then drop back to the baseline to buy reaction time. Scoring follows the modern format of games to 11 with a two point margin. A match lasts about three minutes, which makes it an easy 2 player game to fit into a break, and it plays well with a mouse, a finger or the keyboard.

How to play Table Tennis

Goal: be the first player to reach 11 points with a lead of at least two.
Drag or move your pointer to slide your paddle across your end of the table. A and D or the left and right arrow keys work as well.
After a short pause the ball is served from the middle of the table. Return it by getting your paddle in its path.
If the ball gets past your baseline, your opponent scores a point. The ball rebounds off the side edges, so it stays in play until someone misses.
Every paddle hit makes the ball faster, and moving your paddle sideways during contact adds angle to the return.
At 10 all, play continues until one player leads by two. Scores are capped at 20, and whoever is ahead at the cap wins.
The match also has a clock. If it runs out first, the player in front wins, and level scores are a draw.

Return to the middle after every shot. The ball can be sent to either corner, and the centre is the only place that covers both.
Use the paddle edge on purpose. Meeting the ball off centre throws it wide, which is the simplest way to pull an opponent out of position.
Swipe across the ball when you want a winner and keep the paddle still when you only need to stay in the rally.
Step forward to cut the angle when your opponent is stretched, then retreat. Standing near the net against a fast ball leaves you no time to react.
Long rallies favour whoever is calmer. The ball eventually moves faster than a paddle can travel, so make the other player do the running before that point.
