About Hoops Duel

One-on-one to 21 is the game people play on any half court when there are only two of them, and Hoops Duel turns that into a fast arcade match. The name is ours, so you will not find it elsewhere, but what it offers is what people mean when they search for a 2 player basketball game: quick possessions, simple controls and a lot of blocked shots.

The court is seen from the side with a raised rim and backboard at each end. Your shot aims itself at the basket, so the skill is in getting open and releasing well. A shot taken standing still, close in and near the top of a jump flies true, while one thrown on the run, from long range or with a defender in your face sprays off target. Baskets are worth two points, or three from beyond the arc, and the ball has to drop down through the rim to count. Bank shots, rim-outs and rebounds are all live.

On defence the same button raises your arms to swat a shot in flight, or pokes the ball loose if you are right on top of the ball handler. You cannot hold the ball for long either, so stalling is not an option. A match lasts at most two and a half minutes, which makes it ideal for a quick best-of-three with a friend.

How to play Hoops Duel

1. Score more points than your opponent by putting the ball through the hoop you are attacking. First to 21 wins outright.
2. The match opens with a loose ball dropped at centre court. Move with A and D, jump with W, and run into a slow ball to pick it up.
3. With the ball, press J or click to shoot. The shot aims at the rim automatically, and its accuracy depends on your position, movement and timing.
4. A basket is worth 2 points, or 3 if the shot was released from behind the three-point arc. A lucky tip or rebound that drops in counts as 2.
5. Without the ball, press J or click to raise your arms. That swats a nearby shot away, or can strip the ball when you are close to the player holding it.
6. You can only hold the ball for a couple of seconds before it comes loose, so shoot before the possession runs out.
7. After each basket the player who conceded gets the ball back in their own half.
8. If nobody reaches 21, whoever leads at the two-and-a-half-minute buzzer wins. Equal scores at the buzzer are a draw.

Hoops Duel tips and strategy

• Shoot at the top of your jump, not on the way up. Releasing near the apex with your feet set is the most accurate shot in the game and also the hardest to block.
• Create space before you shoot. A defender standing close scatters your shot badly, so take a step away or wait for them to jump first.
• Threes are worth the risk only when you are open and still. A contested long shot misses far more often than a contested short one.
• On defence, stay between the ball handler and your rim and jump when they jump. A mistimed swat leaves you stuck in the air while they shoot unguarded.
• Follow every miss. The ball bounces hard off the rim and backboard, and whoever reads the rebound first usually gets a close-range shot.
